Concentration: Capturing the Quiet Artistry of a Chef

Black and white photo of a chef focused in a rustic kitchen, captured through a reflective window with an Olympus OMD Em5 Mark II and 25mm 1.8 lens.

There’s something uniquely captivating about catching someone in the zone—completely absorbed in their work. Recently, I found myself wandering the streets, camera in hand, when I stumbled upon a moment of pure concentration. Through a glass window, I saw a chef, fully immersed in his culinary craft. The world outside blurred softly in the reflection, creating a striking contrast to the sharp focus of the chef inside. I couldn’t resist capturing it.

Using my trusty Olympus OMD Em5 Mark II paired with the Olympus 25mm 1.8 lens, I snapped the shot that I’ve titled “Concentration.” The camera’s compactness and precision made it the perfect choice for this kind of spontaneous street photography. I wanted to bring the chef’s concentration into sharp relief while letting the background dissolve into a soft blur, so I set the aperture wide open at f/1.8. This setting allowed me to isolate the subject beautifully. To ensure the image stayed crisp, I chose an ISO of 200 and a shutter speed of 1/125s—just fast enough to freeze the moment without sacrificing the natural light filtering in.

As much as I enjoy using my Fuji XT-2—especially when I apply a custom Fuji recipe for those rich, dynamic tones—this moment called for the subtlety and clarity that only my Olympus gear could deliver. That’s the beauty of street photography: it’s all about choosing the right tools to capture the right moment.
