Light vs. Nothing: Capturing the Unseen

Street photography by Ramon Trotman featuring a skeleton figure holding flowers behind a chain-link fence, showcasing the unique eye of a street photographer.

As a street photographer, I’m constantly drawn to moments that speak to something deeper—those fleeting, often overlooked scenes that hold a strange beauty. My recent capture, which I’ve titled “Light vs. Nothing,” embodies this perfectly. In this image, a skeletal figure stands behind a fence, holding a bouquet of flowers that somehow seem both alive and timeless. There’s a sense of contrast here, a battle between light and shadow, life and death—something ethereal yet grounded in reality.

When I set out to capture this image, I knew I needed the right equipment to bring out the nuances of the scene. I used my trusted Olympus OMD EM5 for this shot, a camera that never fails to deliver crisp, detailed images, even in challenging conditions. I paired it with the Olympus 45mm 1.8 lens, which allowed me to play with depth of field and focus on the most compelling aspects of the scene.

For this particular image, I chose an aperture of f/1.8 to create a shallow depth of field. This decision helped me isolate the skeletal figure and bouquet, blurring the background just enough to add a sense of mystery without losing context. I set the ISO to 200 to keep the image clean and free of noise, allowing the natural light to work its magic. Finally, a shutter speed of 1/500 was perfect for freezing the moment while keeping everything sharp and detailed.

As with much of my work under Ramon Trotman Photography, this image speaks to the power of observation in street photography. It’s about finding beauty in the unexpected, about seeing light where others might see nothing.
